However, in the midst of all of that I am reminded of the striving that happened in 2015. I worried, fretted, and worked hard to manipulate situations in order to have the outcome I thought was best. I forgot that it wasn’t really up to me, and in the middle of all the hustling I missed so many opportunities to experience true joy. In fact, it wasn’t until I took time to reflect on the year that I even recognized many of his blessings. There is a part of me that grieves the missed chances to see God at work and all of the wasted time spent on worry. I’m so guilty of missed moments.
After reflecting on those things I made a commitment to live differently in 2016, which led me to my one word focus for the year.
Do you participate in the One Word challenge? I really love this concept. The idea is that instead of creating a list of resolutions for the new year, you choose a one word theme for the year ahead. (I do have to say that I also create goals for the year in addition to a theme.) This one word idea moves goal setting from a list of tasks to complete to creating a real vision for your year. I love the intentionality of thinking through what you want your year to be about, what you want it to stand for, not simply what you want to accomplish.
This word also serves as a filter for making decisions throughout the year. For example, if your word is rest you may choose to delete your social media accounts for a period of time in order to create space for things that actually restore. It allows for the opportunity to live purposefully all year long.
My word for 2016 is delight.
I’m so in love with this word. I think it takes the focus away doing, creating, hustling, and places it on simply resting the goodness of our God and finding joy in each moment and opportunity he’s given me.
I want this year to be about delighting in the Lord and simply delighting in this one life I have. I’m committing to delighting in the fun, delighting in the struggle, delighting in the work, delighting in community, and delighting in the normal, everyday things.
I hope you join me in choosing one word to define your year ahead. Living purposefully and intentionally changes the game. When we move from simply existing to actually living, big things happen. I believe that choosing a one word focus is one step in making that happen.
